Jeanette Buege has been with the Racine Family YMCA in Racine, Wisconsin, for two and a half years. She handles the accounting and oversees the payroll there. After looking at various payroll software packages, Jeanette decided to make the switch to Red Wing Software’s CenterPoint Payroll application. Here is what Jeanette has to say.
“The Racine Family Y had been using a payroll service for at least five years. Last year we analyzed our process, determined we were doing all the work and sending over the hours to the service provider just to write the checks. We also noticed we were spending more time than necessary managing payroll data. Each time there was a change, we would go in, make the change, and then send all the changes to the service. We learned the hard way that we would have to wait until the files were returned before we could make any additional changes; otherwise new data would be overlaid when we received the file back.
Another critical feature we needed in any payroll software we chose was to have it interface with Points North’s “Who’s Where” online retirement tracking tool. CenterPoint Software allowed us to do this. Prior to our payroll being put under my supervision, in January of 2006, the tracking of the YMCA’s retirement hours was done manually, which consumed a lot of time and caused us to miss employees who were eligible. We had been paying for the Who’s Where service for two to three years but had not been using it. I highly recommend that every YMCA use this tool, especially now that the National YMCA is paying for the service.
With CenterPoint Payroll, check writing is done electronically, since all employees are paid via direct deposit. The file is transmitted right from CenterPoint Payroll directly to our bank. Tax filing is made easy with the ability to generate tax forms from data already within the system, and we simply transmit them electronically.
We estimate the money we’ll save by making the switch from a service to CenterPoint Payroll to be about $10,000 per year. We expect to streamline our processes even more in the next month by adding a time and attendance system and integrating it directly into CenterPoint Payroll, eliminating the hand-entry of hours into the system.
I attended the payroll training at the Red Wing, Minnesota training facility and was impressed with the staff and the atmosphere there. We are pleased with the telephone support from Red Wing Software. They seem to understand the payroll process better than the representatives from the service we were using. I like the fact that I can bring up suggestions and issues and know they will be addressed.
Using CenterPoint Payroll provides a comfortable feeling. We are now in control of our payroll, and we know that if there are errors, we made them and can easily fix them ourselves in a timely manner. We are also more confident in the payroll data and know that it’s up to date when it comes time to process our payroll.”

The YMCA of Austin, MN has a large number of part time employees and many of them work in several departments at different pay rates.
